Focused Independent Study (meets for 4 weeks)
Focused Independent Study in Clay
This class is designed for students with some clay experience and have taken at least 2 classes with me, who are ready to spend intentional, focused time developing a piece they’ve been wanting to make.
Whether you’re drawn to the wheel or hand-building, you’ll be supported in exploring a form that feels both challenging and personally meaningful. This is a space to deepen your voice and refine your skills.
Students work at their own pace while:
Refining technique
Problem-solving in real time
Moving an idea from concept to finished object
Projects might include strengthening coil construction, developing tiles or sculptural forms, throwing jars or vessels, or simply giving yourself the space to follow a curiosity with thoughtful guidance along the way.
Registration includes:
One 1-hour private session per week (4 weeks total)
During this time we will:Do demonstrations as needed
Discuss your ideas and overall body of work
Troubleshoot technical challenges
Refine form and surface decisions
Access to open studio during regular open hours
This gives you additional time to work, experiment, and deepen your process between sessions.Studio Firing Policy
Work placed on the bisque or glaze shelves will be fired when kiln shelves are full. Firing is included during your month of enrollment.
Any work that is on the firing shelves before the end of your enrollment period will be included, even if it has not yet been fired.
Work left unfinished or not placed on the shelves before your enrollment ends will not be fired and will require an additional firing fee if you would like it completed. Students are responsible for finishing and preparing their work for firing within their enrollment period.
Kiln Cost for additional work:
On average, I do 2-3 bisque firings a month and 2-3 glaze firings.
The average height of work is about 5.5” tall for work
A kiln shelf is 26”x13”
Per firing:
½ shelf : $40
Full Shelf (2 ½ shelves): $70
Full Kiln: $150
This includes the loading and unloading, firing time, electricity and wear and tear on the kiln and shelves.
Make sure your clay is the appropriate clay (mid-fire cone 5-6)
Make sure your glazes are ¼” up from the foot.
Make sure your bottoms are wiped clean.
Make sure you put your work on a cookie.
