Colored Clay: Exploring Form + Surface from Within
In this hands-on workshop, we’ll explore the creative possibilities of working with colored clay bodies—where color isn’t just applied to the surface, but becomes an integral part of the form itself.
We’ll begin by discussing which clay bodies are best suited for colorants and how to safely and effectively mix stains or oxides directly into clay to build a rich, personal palette. You’ll learn how to prepare colored clay from scratch, including techniques for achieving smooth, even distribution and tips for storing batches for future use.
From there, we’ll dive into forming techniques that celebrate the inherent beauty of colored clay. Demonstrations will include layering, marbling, nerikomi, and inlay methods—approaches that reveal pattern, depth, and movement throughout the piece rather than just on the surface.
By the end of the session, each participant will create a unique work using their own custom-colored clay bodies, leaving with both practical technical knowledge and fresh inspiration to continue experimenting in their own studios.
Pieces will be fired and local pick up. Shipping can be arranged for the cost of shipping.
